PROJECT 2 - DETAILS

How to get there

What to expect

After a brief training sessions, Scouts will be broken up into TEAMS of 5 or 6. Each team will have a trained leader (Venturer or adult advisor). We have a specific area of the reserve where we will be working. The team leader will take you to that area and show you what to look for. Removing garlic mustard is just like pulling weeds in a garden.

What to bring

  • Water bottle or Nalgene

  • Sunscreen

  • Day pack (optional)

  • Gardening gloves (optional)

  • Clothing for the weather (layers recommended)

Safety

Animals
. Deer, chipmunks and squirrels are the most prevalent animals in this area. Although unlikely, we might see a couple of non-poisonous snakes. They usually are more scared of us than we are them.

Bugs. Depending on the weather, there may be only a few or a lot. Bug repellent will be available for everyone.

Poison Ivy. There are some areas with small pockets poison ivy. Everyone will be shown what to look for and told to avoid the plants. Scouts are encouraged to wear long pants. A washing station will be provided. People who are easily susceptible to poison ivy should bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag for the soiled clothes. Just to make sure, everyone is encouraged to change their clothes and shower when they return home.

Briars. There are many areas with briars, thorns, and other brush that could cut you. To avoid injury we will avoid these areas.

First Aid. Each team leader will have a first aid kit and a licensed nurse will be available as our first aid officer.

Hydration. Bring a personal water bottle and stay hydrated! Water will be provided throughout the work area.

Weather. We will work in the rain. We will not work in a thunderstorm.
